Read the description as a set of separate questions
A listing title often mixes a colour, a finish, a base metal and a style. Separate those ideas before deciding whether the piece is right for you. Field labels are not standardized enough to trust without context: “material” may name a base, a finish, a combination, or an incomplete description.
Base metal and finish
Look for a statement about the metal beneath the surface, plus a separate statement about the surface. Gold-plated brass is not solid gold, but it is a coherent description. If the source names only a gold colour or a plating, do not guess what lies underneath.
Thickness and terminology
Record a declared coating thickness only when it appears in a source for the exact item. Attribute it to that source; do not describe it as our measurement. Missing from the fields checked is not the same as undisclosed everywhere. A micron figure does not, on its own, promise a fixed service life.
For the US labeling term “vermeil,” 16 CFR §23.4 specifies a sterling-silver base, gold or gold alloy of at least 10-karat fineness, and a minimum thickness equivalent to 2.5 microns of fine gold, along with the provision’s other conditions. “Equivalent to fine gold” is not an unqualified physical thickness for every karat alloy. This definition does not establish an individual product’s durability.
Stamps and dimensions need context
A stamp field is not our independent assay. If fields appear inconsistent, first check the selected variant, units, rounding and whether one figure includes an extender. An unresolved difference should be identified as unresolved—not automatically as deception.
Fit and closure
- For hoops: inner versus outer diameter, post dimensions, and closure type.
- For necklaces: main chain length, extender range, pendant size and fastening.
- For rings: stated size system, band width and any adjustment range.
- For earrings: verify any available weight refers to one piece, a pair or packaging. Do not invent a universal comfortable-weight threshold.
Care, returns and sensitive skin
Read item-specific care restrictions and current returns conditions. Do not infer waterproofness, nickel-free status or suitability for every allergy from a generic metal label. Where a merchant makes a performance claim, attribute it and keep its limits visible; we have not independently tested it.
A short buying checklist
- Identify the exact item and variant.
- Confirm the source and the date checked.
- Separate base, finish, dimensions and care.
- Leave unverified values unresolved.
- Choose on your own styling needs and the merchant’s current terms, not an invented score.

Editorial correction: An earlier version overstated what our research established. A gold coating and a brass base are compatible, not contradictory. Coating thickness alone does not predict how long an individual piece will last. The earlier marketplace comparison and review extracts have been withdrawn pending a permissions review.
