Start with the look, then check the details
A gold-tone hoop or layered necklace can be a useful everyday piece without being solid gold. The shopping question is not whether plating is inherently bad. It is whether the item suits your preferred look, fit, care routine and budget—and whether the seller explains what you are buying.
A coating and a base metal can both be correctly described
“Gold-plated brass” and “Brass” can describe the same item: the first names the finish and its base, while the second names the base. Neither description, by itself, is a contradiction. A title that says gold-plated should not be read as a claim that the entire piece is solid gold.
What to check before choosing
- Exact variant: match the colour, size and model you intend to buy. Specifications can differ between variants.
- Base and finish: look for separate descriptions of the metal underneath and the coating. Do not infer a missing base from another item.
- Fit: check wearable dimensions, extension range and closure. Distinguish outer hoop diameter from inner clearance.
- Care: read the seller’s restrictions on showering, swimming, cosmetics and storage.
- Returns: confirm the current return conditions before checkout, including any restrictions for earrings.
What a missing figure actually means
If a thickness value is absent from the fields inspected, the supported conclusion is “not found in those fields.” It is not proof that the manufacturer never publishes it, that the item has no coating, or that the finish is poor. Check the original manufacturer, relevant descriptions and the exact variant before drawing a broader conclusion.
No service-life promise
Coating thickness can help describe a finish, but it is not a wear-test result. Substrate, construction, abrasion, care and exposure also matter. We have not bought, worn or measured the pieces discussed in our earlier research, and we cannot promise a year of wear.

Editorial correction: An earlier version overstated what our research established. A gold coating and a brass base are compatible, not contradictory. Coating thickness alone does not predict how long an individual piece will last. The earlier marketplace comparison and review extracts have been withdrawn pending a permissions review.
